Whale Shark Encounter

Whale sharks are the largest known fish in the world. There have been many previous sightings of these at the Dive and Trek Marine Sanctuary.

Commonly called Butanding, all these sightings were not documented by photos and therefore have not been widely accepted as fact.

That is, until now.

This morning, we received an early Christmas gift when we saw, swam, and played with the whale shark for more than 10 minutes, allowing photos to be taken as proof.

It was just slightly smaller than our boat and the boat men feared for my safety when I went down the water in snorkeling gear. They almost jumped out with joy though, when the butanding got curious and started playing with me. "Ang bait pala!", they exclaimed.

Be sure to view the images in full size to clearly see the butanding through the water.

Tired from excitement, snorkeler rode the pontoon on the way back to the resort's pier.
