Miss Earth International - Dive & Trek Clam Seeding
2003
|
Dive & Trek Resort and Marine
Sanctuary together with twenty two Miss Earth 2003 International candidates from
all over the world held a Clam Seeding Event last
coming Oct. 18. 2003. More than a hundred dive volunteers assisted
the Ms. Earth
delegates in placing the giant clams in the marine sanctuary.
Miss Earth is a
beauty pageant that search and develop true "beauties for a
cause." The delegates and winners give meaning and relevance
to this beauty competition by promoting worthwhile
environmental causes and getting actively involved in caring
for and preserving Mother Earth.
The giant clams (Tridacna
Gigas) seeded at the Dive & Trek Marine Sanctuary
are known locally as the Taklobo and are among the endangered
species in the Philippines protected under CITES, the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
Flora.
Through this activity, Dive &
Trek, the Miss Earth International Candidates, the local
government of Bauan, volunteer divers, and friends promote
world wide awareness to the status of the giant clams as well
as the efforts that can be done to save them.
This event
is part of the Department of Tourism’s
WOW Philippines program. The major sponsors were BPI Edge, Smart Addict, Joey 92.3
FM, San Miguel Light, Wallenius Lines, and the municipality of Bauan, Batangas
headed by Mayor Dolor.
